+ Read MoreAlthough it was several years ago all concerned feel that this was the ultimate trek. It offered everything: rural landscapes, high mountain country, traversing glaciers, a non-technical ice-fall to negotiate, a high (5700 metres) pass (the Teshi Lapcha) to cross, and a wonderful sense of isolation, and optionally five days of playing at high altitude, including an ascent of Yalung Ri or Ramdung, for which crampons, ice axes, ropes were essential although it’s not a technically difficult mountain. The Nepali team carried gear to a high camp, and then descended to wait in the valley at Na, though most groups attempting Ramdung take the full team to Ramdung Base Camp, then porters and guide to Ramdung High Camp before attempting the peak
It’s a great trip for walkers who are confident with ice-axe and crampons, and for aspiring mountaineers. It has to be done as a camping trek: between Na and Thame there are no lodges.
Day 01: Arrival to Kathmandu
Day02. Preparation for the trek
Day 2: Drive to Singate (mainly downhill then along the valley)
Day 3: Trek to Suri Dhoban ( just 2 hrs., a very short morning, but an irresistible campsite at the confluence of two rivers)
Day 4: Trek to Gongar khola (following the valley)
Day 5: Trek to Simigaon (up-valley to the bridge, cross, then ascend steeply but not too painfully to Simigaon, a very pleasant village)
Day 6: Trek to Dongang (initial ascent, then down to the valley-floor)
Day 7: Trek to Beding (Steadily uphill following the valley)
Day 8: Rest / acclimatisation at Beding
Day 9: Trek to Na
Day 10: Rest / explore around Na (if necessary, sort out gear for high camp) From here it’s possible to ascend to Ramdung Base Camp, and to climb this trekking peak. Allow another 4 – 5 days if this is the plan)
Day 11: Trek to Tsho Rolpa (along the valley floor, then ascend the terminal moraine to reach a delightful ablation valley of the south side of the glacier. There’s a large ‘porter cabin’ under a huge overhanging rock)
Day 12: Trek to Jhanga the foot of the Drolumboa Ice-fall. (Initially an ascent, then drop down to the surface of the Trakarding Glacier. A hard day !)
Day 13: Trek to Tashiphuk, Ascend the ice-fall. (steep, but not too difficult: with help from the sirdar hand-lines were riggedin a couple of places toassist laden porters. Beyond the ice-fall continue along the Drolumboa glacier – not very steep, and short of crevasses – before turning right to make the final ascent of the Teshi Lapcha. Keep left once you’ve crossed, following rock terraces to reach a descent gulley. Camp about 2 hours below the pass (although it’s possible to camp at the pass itself – very cold and windy !))
Day14. Trek to Yakkharka
Day 15: Trek via Thengpo (first tea-house for several days ) to Thame
Day 16: Trek to Namche
Day 17: Rest in Namche
Day18. Trek to Lukla
Day 19. Fly to Kathmandu
Day 20. In time transfere to board flight for onward destination
